Celebrating 50 Years of the IDEA
The SELPA Administrators of California are proud to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), signed into law on November 29, 2025 by President Gerald Ford. The preamble to the IDEA, specifically in 20 USC § 1400(c)(1), states, "disability is a natural part of the human experience and in no way diminishes the right of individuals to participate in or contribute to society." Since its passage in 1975, IDEA has transformed the educational landscape by ensuring that children with disabilities receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), grounded in the principles of equity, access, and inclusion.
To mark this important milestone, SELPA Administrators of California put together several pieces below, that hopefully you will be able to review, use, and enjoy in your own classroom, school, district, charter, county office, or SELPA.
